Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humans
A Conversation with Lee Rainie of Pew Research
Some of the world’s most visible tech leaders are divided on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its purported benefits and risks. For example, Mark Zuckerberg is a vocal advocate whereas Elon Musk believes with advances in AI we risk “summoning a demon”. Would we better or worse off in our pursuit of AI? What would some of the world’s leading experts say about our future with AI, and the consequences it may have on jobs, industries such as healthcare, and even our sense of agency?
To help us answer those questions, we sought out a conversation with a leading researcher at Pew Research Center. Our guest in this podcast is Lee Rainie. Lee is the director of internet and technology research at Pew Research Center where he looks at the social impact of the internet on people’s lives. Lee is a co-author of a report called “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humans”. The report canvassed 979 technology pioneers, innovators, developers, business and policy leaders, researchers and activists to seek their perspective on what positive or negative impacts may have on human life by 2030. Do these experts paint a future where AI will transform our lives to be more productive and efficient? Do they anticipate that AI will match or exceed human intelligence and capabilities on complex tasks and decision making? What industries, and aspects of our lives will be positively transformed by AI? And what is the price we may pay in terms of human agency, jobs, privacy, cybercrime and even economic disparity.
Listen in on the lively discussion.
